Chema Garcia Sanchez

Hello, my name is Chema, I am from Seville (Spain) and I am 48 years old.

In the summer of 2022, my right nipple retracted, and I noticed a lump behind it. I went to a dermatology consultation, and they sent me for an ultrasound in which the radiologist highly suspected that it could be breast cancer. They did a biopsy, and the suspicion was confirmed.

They operated on October 19, 2022, and performed a mastectomy and lymphadenectomy since the sentinel node was affected. I was diagnosed with Stage 2B – ER+, HER2- Luminal B.  Coincidentally it was Breast Cancer Day. The strangest thing I noticed was that although I didn’t feel bad was that they operated on me in a women’s hospital, they gave me women’s pajamas until I found a pair of men’s.

In December 2022, I saw my Oncologist and after several tests, they decided to give me 12 sessions of chemotherapy and then 15 sessions of radiotherapy.

I am currently receiving hormonal treatment and according to my oncologist everything is going well but I always feel the fear that the cancer will return.

The disease has marked a before and after in my life. I have not been able to go back to work as a truck driver since they told me that due to the after-effects on my arm, it was incompatible with my job.

I currently belong to the INVI Association in Spain, and I do everything in my power to give visibility to male breast cancer since even my friends have told me that a man could not have it and we have to give it more visibility so that we can self-examine ourselves and if we notice something, go see a doctor.

I hope my story helps some man. Greetings and thank you for letting me share it.
