Dr. Stephen A. Chagares is a general, laparoscopic, robotic and breast surgeon, certified by The American Board of Surgery. He graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1986 and obtained his medical doctor degree in 1990 from Rutgers Medical School. Upon graduation, he completed his residency in general surgery at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ, and then obtained specialty training in breast surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City when he elected this rotation during his ¬surgical residency. He received his training in robotic mastectomy from Dr. Antonio Toesca at The Europena Institute of Oncology (Milan); Dr. Toesca is the pioneer of robotic mastectomy technique. In 2018, Dr. Chagares is currently the only breast surgeon in the United States who is certified to perform a robotic nipple-sparing mastectomy. In 2018, performed the first male robotic mastectomy worldwide.

In addition to breast surgery, Dr. Chagares regularly performs hernia repairs of all types, including open, laparoscopic and robotic repairs. He was the first surgeon in the region to perform a robotic hernia repair and remains on the cutting edge of all advanced surgical techniques. He routinely performs multiple other abdominal procedures, including laparoscopic gallbladder removal, and is also a specialist in surgical resection of skin and soft tissue cancers. His private practice is affiliated with Monmouth Medical Center, Riverview Medical Center, Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital; and is affiliated with several outpatient surgical facilities and nursing homes.

Dr. ChagaresHe has received numerous awards for excellence and academic teaching including Monmouth Medical Center’s Golden Apple Award (multiple years), given by the surgical residents for excellence in academic teaching, and has been selected as a New Jersey Monthly magazine “Top Doctor” nine years in a row. Dr. Chagares is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, The Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center, The Society of Surgeons of New Jersey, the Monmouth Surgical Society, and the American Medical Association.
