Ander Urruticorchea, MD, PhD, Institute Scientific and General Manager, Onkologikoa Foundation, San Sebastián, Spain; Associate Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Deusto, Bilbao, Spain

 

Dr Urruticoecheais a specialist in Medical Oncology (Institut Català d’Oncologia, Barcelona, 2002) and PhD in Medicine (Universitat de Barcelona, 2008) with expertise in breast cancer. He trained in Barcelona and London (Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of Cancer Research from 2002-2004 under Professors Ian Smith and Mitch Dowsett) and served as member and Head of the Breast Unit in the Institut Català d’Oncologia (Barcelona) for nine years. Dr. Urruticoechea has focused his research on molecular biology and the treatment of breast cancer, with a particular focus on endocrine resistance.

He is Vice-Chair of GEICAM (The Spanish Breast Cancer Group), where he co-leads the Spanish Registry of Male Breast Cancer and is member of the scientific board of the translational research working group. Active in the Breast International Group (BIG) as a GEICAM representative for a number of years, he joined BIG’s Executive Board in 2017. Since May 2019, he serves as Treasurer of BIG’s Executive Board.

Since March 2013, Dr Urruticoechea serves in The Onkologikoa Foundation in San Sebastian (Spain) as Scientific and General Manager, where he combines the clinical care of breast cancer patients with the scientific leadership and management of the foundation.

In November 2021, he joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Deusto as an Associate Professor. He currently combines his work at the University with the Scientific and General Management at Onkologikoa Foundation.

He is author of 60 international publications on breast cancer biology, endocrine treatment and novel therapies and participates in several research projects.
